Some of My Works

Writing and the search for cash

on Dec 24, 09 at 02:03 AM

I have just been accepted into the news reporter community. I am rather interested in what it's like. It seems so far as if I can pick my topic and write about it as long as it is a genuine news story.

I'm going to check it out and see what I think. This will be a little more in line with my day job.

Wish me luck!

I just signed up for Twitter. My screenname is KurtMoore. Tweet me.

And maybe I'll figure out what this is all about.

I have to admit I'm slow jumping on the Twitter bandwagon. Social networking is definitely changing the landscape of journalism, both in good and bad ways. It also is enabling us to reach way beyond the boundaries of our own communities.

At the same time, I wonder sometimes if I really have enough that people will give a tweet about.

Guess I'll find out.

I come armed with 14 years of newspaper experience, stretching back to when America Online was the Internet beast and facebook wasn't even a concept.

Now my thoughts center around whether it prepared me for an online writing career.

A lack of cash has brought me here. It's simple enough. Days off without pay equals unhappy writers, whether or not the economy is to blame. Bills on top of bills drive us to search for cash. So we do what we know how to do.

We write for cash.

So far I've encountered blogging and social networking. Now I'm preparing to research search engine optimization.

After 14 years I have just realized something.

I am back at the starting line.

My work philosophy

My daddy was a packer when I was a child. He spent his days packing dishes at a local pottery, working hard with his hands.

I remember the day I visited him at work and said I want to do his job.

"No you don't," he growled, staring at me. "You will go to college and have an easier life."

I did as he said, at least the college part. I decided to become a journalist because I was much better working with words than with my hands.

As far as the easier life, not exactly sure if that's true. But I still follow his basic philosophy.

Work hard. Be proud of a day's good work.

If one job fails, find another one. Do not leave your mind nor your hands idle.

Always remember to pack so that there's room for more.

My job as a reporter hasn't always left me with room for much else. It isn't an easy life. Words, meanwhile, haven't been any guarantee against living the po' man life.

So as newspaper journalism enters an uncertain future, I am embracing online writing as a second venture. Even though the medium's different, and the writing will be too, the philosophy will stay the same.
