How to Use 'i.e.' Versus 'e.g.'

Commonly confused.

The abbreviations "i.e." and "e.g." are commonly confused.  This zone will clear up the difference once and for all so that you can use these abbreviations correctly and with confidence.

Instructions
Step 1
What do they mean, anyway?

The commonly used abbreviation "i.e." stands for the Latin phrase "id est,"  which literally translates to "that is".

The abbreviation "e.g." is also widely used and stands for the Latin phrase, "exempli gratia," which means "for example."

Step 2
When do I use "i.e."?

You can use the abbreviation "i.e." in place of the words "that is," "in other words," or "to put it another way."  Here are some examples of the correct use of "i.e.":

1.  When hiking, bring snacks that are easy to carry, i.e. food that will fit in your backpack.

2. Get help with grammar from an expert, i.e. someone you know to be a language whiz.

Step 3
When do I use "e.g."?

Use "e.g." whenever you are providing a specific example to illustrate your point.  Here are some examples of correct use of e.g.:

1.  When hiking, bring snacks that are easy to carry, e.g. granola bars.

2. Get help with grammar from an expert, e.g. your English teacher.

Quiz answers

Questions 1, 4, and 6 should all be filled in with "e.g." since the writer of the sentence is giving a specific example.

Questions 2, 3, and 5 should all be filled in with "i.e." since the writer of the sentence is rephrasing what she just said.
